Just as every new business goes through growing pains, BroadVision was no exception. In 2013, CEO and co-owner Jon Sooy found himself wearing the financial hat for the company. While it is common for business owners to jump into such a role, he struggled with running this part of the business, worrying about cash flow and not seeing the big picture.
Jon adds, “I was treating the business bank account as if it were a gas tank, always checking the gas gauge to see the fuel level. It was exhausting. Can we do things? Can we hire someone?”
Invoicing, receivables, payroll, reconciliations were all adding up to extra hours for Jon, leading to a decision between studying to become a CFO or handing-off responsibility to better BroadVision. There was no feedback, advice, forecasting, help, or strategy provided. With significant growth occurring, change was needed.

Company Objective:
Beginning as a marketing coach, Jaco soon realized he liked being involved in developing the strategy behind a client’s marketing plan. He wanted to develop a marketing agency that provided that marketing strategy without taking up too much of his clients’ time. During that time Jaco teamed up with his long-time friend Jon Sooy and together they dived into the world of inbound marketing, with Jon handling the technical side while Jaco focused on the marketing strategy, allowing them to work together to grow their clients’ businesses.
As the company grew, understanding their finances became more and more important. BroadVision Marketing had to plan for more employees and bigger projects. Being able to make accurate financial projections became critical. Questions such as;
“Can we afford to hire an employee right now or do we have to wait two more months? Or, “Can we upgrade or buy that new software now?” These were issues we struggled with as neither Jon nor I had any significant financial training or experience. We could not see farther than the next few months.”
During a ProVisors social golf game, Jaco was grouped with Nikole and as the game progressed, Jaco started asking Nikole for advice and soon realized that partnering with Momentum Accounting would be a significant investment in BroadVision Marketing/s ability to make sound financial decisions. Nikole explained how she and her team can help to “clean up the books” and help Jaco and Jon to understand their finances and make sound financial decisions. This would also relieve Jon from many of his financial tasks and allow him to focus on growing the business. What impressed Jaco the most was Nikole’s professional demeanor during their conversation. She didn’t just jump on board; she listened and digested the questions. She analyzed before answering; she was hungry for more information and truly saw a bigger picture. In that moment, Jaco knew partnering with Momentum Accounting was a step in the right direction for BroadVision Marketing.
Naturally not financially minded, Jaco was risk-averse and quite protective of what had been created. Momentum promised to capitalize on opportunities and provide analytics and communication to educate and promote understanding. The partnership was born.
The Momentum Solutions:
While Jon explains the financial side of Momentum’s impact to BroadVision Marketing, Jaco presents another view. The peace and confidence are almost tangible as he describes the relationship and trust within the partnership.
Nicole and her team dug deep into the financials and provided insight on what couldn’t be seen. They exposed where money was being excessively spent, comparing internal employment over contractors – meaning higher in-house productivity and solid offerings to clients. These strategic business decisions have proved to be a game-changer for BVM.
Prior to partnering with Momentum Accounting, Jon handled all finances, but now, Jaco has the confidence to attend every meeting – even having the ability to ask questions and receive educational answers. He has the confidence of understanding how business is flowing and what the future looks like at BVM. Momentum sorted through previous books to categorize spending and breakdown needs versus unnecessaries. A live-feed dashboard was created and is continually utilized to provide a visual of charts, graphs, and apps to allow access anywhere and anytime to the company’s finance.
Momentum also challenged Jaco to look at ‘pipeline financials.’ What current accounts contribute and how will new accounts be included into the pipeline? How will new revenue be determined, allocated, and then utilized? These conversations quickly became continuous throughout monthly meetings, ensuring all earnings were pursued and categorized. Constant follow-up from Momentum leads to consistent discussions with current and potential clients.
Looking back on how the partnership began, Jaco adds that the ‘secret to getting Nicole’s best answers is to take her out for a golf game!” All joking aside, Momentum is readily available and eager to support. There is a passion (on both sides) that creates a balance to better business.
